Let me simplify. If get a young player who I think was brought up too soon, is it better to send him to the minors to develop and risk a demotion penalty or keep him in the majors.

Players develop when they're playing. Demotion penalties are insignificant. That said, there's no reason the player you listed needs to be demoted unless you're playing with his service time.

He is a 6-year pro. He is not going to develop much more.

MikeT, if player development is impacted primarly by playing time, why does growth and development seem to slow dramaticly once players are promoted to the ML team? I know coaching plays a factor into player development also but ML coaches are generally much more advanced then minor league coaches so it would make since that players growth would continue at a steady pace throughout the year and during the offseason on the ML team, but in my experience this is not the case. Any help you can offer would be great!!!

You will notice a pattern that players typically don't progress much after their 3rd pro year. Usually players are not called up before their 4th year, so that is why it gives the impression that the promotion had something to do with the players slowing in development.

S26 pretty much nailed it. Seeing a player develop after his 5th pro season is practically unheard of. He may increase a point or two in a few categories but players generally do most of their development in their first two full seasons.

My favorite HBD player, Slammin' Sammy Davis, and probably the only one I've ever called up before his 4th season:

As you can see, huge increase between S8-9, big increase between S9-10, and despite being called up in S10, a nice increase between S10-S11.
