Recruiting 101 (DIII) Topic

This is my first season and recruiting starts tonight. I have already done some Future Scouting in a few nearby states. What are the first things I should be doing when recruiting opens?

P.S. I have 6 open scholarships and A prestige.

You should read the Guide for New Coaches posted above.

Agreed. Specifically read the part about PullDowns/Dropdowns. With an A prestige, you can pull great DII pulldowns.

I read it, thanks for the heads up.

How do I successfully pulldown/dropdown though? For dropdowns, should I just be waiting and watching to see who comes?

Should I also be going after the top recruits in DIII?

Everyone has their own idea on Pulldown/Dropdowns.
You have options. You can wait for dropdowns to fall onto your DIII screen or you can attempt to pulldown LOCAL DII recruits by using Scouting Trips.

You should for sure look at the top recruits in DIII as some of those are better than DII recruits.

I know this is a recruiting thread too but I will add this:

Do not get discouraged if you are not successful right away. This game takes some learning and some figuring out how to do things. Especially with 6 open schollies, I wouldn't expect to make a deep NT run.

Expect some bumps in the road, learn how to recruit, gameplan, etc and go from there.

Pulldowns are probably not a great idea for your first recruiting experience. There is some risk, especially with limited $$ at D3.

Dropdowns are the way to go. On the first cycle, place a phone call to D2 prospects that you are interested in. If they have the possibility of dropping down they will respond to your call(they will let you know you are a backup if their top schools fall through, or something to that effect). Players that don't respond or that tell you to bug off you have no chance with.

When the player drops down to you they will let you know they are open to further recruiting effort. Careful though, not all players that are potential dropdowns will get to you - some never drop to D3, some get snapped up by higher prestige D3 teams.

Be patient unless you find a guy(s) you are happy with - the best dropdowns often occur later in recruiting.
