I have 27 guys on my 25-man roster and need to move 2 down before the end of spring training. Unfortunately, all of the candidates for demotion are out of options. I just traded one of the pitchers away today, but Spring Training ends this PM2 cycle, so I need to clear out the 25-man before then. If I DFA the player I just traded, I should be fine, right?

That will void your trade, and really irritate your trading partner.

It will really void it? I thought the whole point of DFAing someone is it gives you time to trade them before you have to waive them?

You would have been fine if you DFA'd him first before the trade was accepted. But yes, DFAing him now will void the trade.

Hmm, that sucks. I actually was able to make another trade as well, so I now have two guys to desginate. When I DFA'd the two pitchers it didn't say anything in the trade report. Is it going to fall through on trade completion?

Yes when the cycle comes round to approve your trade, you and your now irritated trade partner will both a receive an email that says the trade was Denied.
You can always 're-do' the trade though.

Ok, thanks for the help. I wonder why that is the case. Designating the player without waivers doesn't really affect them at all - it just pulls them off the 40-man. It shouldn't affect the trade as long as I don't demote them.

Anything that changes their salary or roster status will generally void a trade. DFA changes the roster status.

The only exception that I know of is if a guy is auto-arbed while he is part of a pending trade. I believe those go through (even though his salary status is changed).

It also goes through if you arb a guy during a trade. That has happened to me several times.

You designated them, trade is fubar'd. Hopefully for you the other 'irritated' party will want to re-do the trade.

FYI - both trades went through without a problem.

Well what do you know
