Question on defensive development... Topic

I have no problem playing him at catcher in the minors, but I've found poor defensive catchers to be too much of a liability in the majors: too many stolen bases, pass balls and high pitcher ERA's due to the low pitch call rating. Just from my own experience. Like I said, if I were an AL team he'd be an easy choice for DH, but I just don't want to take the defensive hit. Especially because I have a comparable offensive catcher in the bigs now, who's much better defensively and only a couple years older. I just thought if there was a way he could improve in other areas, I could give him a shot at 1B. (As I said above, I based the question on a change in his projections, which I failed to attribute to the slight increase in ADV scouting, which I forgot I did.)

I do this from time to time when playing NL teams in interleague play and it seems that the they make the routine plays(not many errors), but rack up a ton of - plays.
Go to your league's fielding statistics for the past year for first baseman. Come up with a formula that converts put-outs, assists, errors, +, -, to runs. Look at how many runs saved above average the best 1B was and look at how many runs below average the worst 1B was. If your league is like mine, it will probably be somewhat similar, ie, the worst-fielding 1B will cost about as many runs as the best-fielding 1B saves. Your guy will be around the worst or maybe even a little below.
Since I am too lazy to create such a formula, you are saying that from your experiences the trade-off is not worth it?
