Seems to entirely contradict what they said to me where they do it the current way which in their eyes is the "most fair" way

you most likely spoke to low level support, who are notoriously clueless and tend to answer with wild guesses.

it still sounds like there may be some time before this comes out, though.

Yeah probably. I bet the issue has come up before with staff on both sides of the issue. I got the dummy that doesn't see that his assertion of it being "most fair" is a pretty subjective statement in itself
