If an international is signed to an ML deal, obviously he goes on the 40-man and his option years start ticking.

At the end of his 3rd year and he's out of option years, then what?

Can he remain in the minors, or does he have to go to the ML squad?

If he can remain in the minors, can he be promoted the next step up (from AA to AAA, for example), or if he is promoted, must it be to the ML squad?

The way I understand it, if the player is already in the minors, he can remain there, but he could not be promoted to another optional assignment (i.e. the next level of the minors). Is my understanding correct, or am I missing something?

Sadly he can remain in the minors until he retires without you risking losing him. You can have him at whatever level you like when in the minors.

OK, but can he be PROMOTED? As in, if he runs out of options, he's on the 40-man still, can he be promoted from AA to AAA?

You can promote and demote at will in the minors with the downside to demoting being that he may take a ratings hit.

Promote at will with the only downside being the player makes a little more money.
