Roster Expansion...call up how many? Topic

How many guys do you call up, usually?

And then do you move up other guys to fill those open MILB spots?

And it starts a guys arb clock if he's not been up before, correct?

And since I set my post-season rosters on the same day (BTW..how many real days do I have to do this?) does that mean that if I get an injury between now and the play-offs that I'm limited to that roster...or can I DL a guy and put somebody else on?

1) It depends on what the state of my major league team is, and what my needs are. Sometimes I'll call up a bunch, other times I'll only call up a couple.

2) Call up time is pretty close to the end of the minor league season. If my AAA team (where almost all my call ups come from) is looking at playoffs, I'd rather have my guys continue to play everyday in AAA than mostly sit on the bench in the majors.

3) Correct. They'll be accruing major league service time.

4) Your 40 man has to be set before call up day. Anybody on the 40 at that time is eligible to be on the playoff roster even if they are not on the major league roster as of that day. They can be promoted to the major league roster and then added to the playoff roster at any time after that.

So, if I understand #4 above, as long as I have a guy on my 40, I can call him up at anytime to add to the playoff roster?

Yes, as long as he was on the 40 BEFORE set playoff roster day.

If you are in the playoff push, I would call up 2 or 3 pitchers, depending on how stretched my staff is. One to spot start and pitch long relief, two to eat innings as set up B's. I would also add the 3rd catcher if you don't have one up, along with a bat for the corner positions and a glove up the middle, and a player at the position if you have a regular at under 95%.

If you don't make the playoffs, don't forget to put the callups back down in the minors before the playoffs end. Also I never call up a guy with 0 options . You can't send him back down without passing him thru waivers. Easy way to lose a valuable player.

If you're in the hunt, a pinch runner or 2, a short stamina pitcher (e.g. a y with ctr/vsL over 80 but sta at 5), additional d-specialists, and hitters with huge platoon splits are useful callups as well.

As for the arb clock, if you plan to start him at the ML level next year, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you plan to do a 20-day callup and save a pre-arb year, this will change the math on doing that.

If I am in a playoff race, I only call up guys that can help me win. I am not going to call up a borderline pitcher because I dont want to risk Simmy puting him out there in a crucial spot. I normally add 1-2 bats and maybe 1 pitcher. But mostly, my theory is that I build my team for a 25 man roster, there is a reason those other guys are not on it.
