which type of OF'er do you prefer in RF (assuming that good all-around defender types are out of the equation).......if you had to choose between hitters with similar offensive output........

the good field/no range type (A/D+ or A-/D) or the middle-of-the-road guy (C-/B+ or C+/B) ???

I prefer the good field/no range guy as long as it's not D- range.

Really, the D+ guy will make maybe 3-4 minus plays a year, and the D guy will maybe make 6-7. Compare that to an extra 10-12 errors from a C or C+ fielder and I'd rather have the glove. Those B range guys won't get any + plays. The B+ guys might get a couple, I guess.

The ones I get in a real quandary about are the A+/D- guys. What does the guy do? Stand in one place, but catch every ball that comes right to him? How much does that D- really hurt? I know it depends on how bad his D- is, but has anyone done any research on that?

D- range covers a wide spectrum. some of them are usable and some are dreadful. You can get an idea by looking up their performance history or researching their range at baseball-reference.com. since the last update these have been less reliable. part timers with D- range have been unpredictable and utility infielders playing secondary positions have been so terrible I've stopped using them.

I though all D- guys were treated equally, now.

D- guys from the deadball era seem to make alot less "-" plays than current era D- range guys. B+ to A+ deadball guys make alot more + plays than current guys as well.

A D- deadball guy prolly won't be terrible, but a more current D- range guy will be atrocious.

dont believe everything you read. the stats seem to tell a different story.
