Does he need to platoon? Topic

He is still young and should reach his projections of 76-79-44-25-70. He may fall a little short at vR, because it seems a stretch that it can increase that much.

What can I expect from him at the major league level?

A fanstastic glove at 2B or in CF... a passable SS who might make more throwing errors that you'd like.

Passable bat, if you can afford to carry him for the sake of his glove. Should steal more than a few bases.

Disagree with iain, no reason this guy can't be a Gold Glove SS... this is only his 3rd full pro season and his arm strength and accuracy are still clearly progressing. Anyone who is 85+ in all 4 fielding categories should automatically be considered a SS, and a guy with 91 range and 88 glove (and counting) makes it that much better.

The fact that he can even hit a little makes him a very valuable asset. If he hits those projections I'd say you might be looking at a .220 hitter with pop, which is more than most people can expect from their slick-fielding shortstops. If his vL is only 44 it makes little sense to platoon him since he won't be a great hitter anyway, so you may as well get the best use out of him as you can via his fielding abilities in the lineup every day. Of course it also depends on your other players. This is just what I would do.

I haven't seen a guy with a vR that low who made it as an everyday player. It's a weird ratings line, to be sure. But can he hit .200 against RHPs?

I'd have no problem at all playing him as an everyday SS. His OVR is a bit higher than I'd like, because it means he'll cost more in arb/FA, but he's actually the type of player I'd love to have at SS and one who can often be traded for because some owners wouldn't value him as anything more than a 25th man defensive replacement.

I think that guy will hit over .200, even with atrocious split ratings. See William Koh. Complete trash with the bat, especially against RH.

S10 vs RH - .174/.210/.212
S9 vs RH - .134/.189/.179
S8 vs RH - .191/.243/.221

And Don Watkins. Again crappy, esp vs LH. His Split numbers in very limited playing time.

S10 vs LH - .203/.214/.246
S9 vs LH - .316/.333/.408

Finally, Dale Watson. His numbers vs RH pitchers -

S7 - .244/.288/.325
S8 - .262/.302/.317
S9 - .263/.295/.325
S10 - .268/.329/.331

Already, the OP's guy has a significantly better bat than any of them, so I don't think he'd have any problem hitting over .200 easily.
