Quote: 2nd - And this is more of a surprise and I know there are many factors, but I saw a team that I have been following in my world LOSE there CT final game and move up 10 RPI points. I lost my CT final to a team that has a record two games better than this other team and I actually dropped a couple of spots in RPI. I also had about a 20% stronger SOS and had about 5 teams from my schedule playing in the CT final last night. A bit baffling.
A number of things to keep in mind here. First, the RPI ranking is what everybody always refers to as the RPI, not the raw RPI numbers. So it is possible that the team in question was in a cluster of teams that were very close in raw RPI and a small improvement led to a big jump in RPI ranking. It is also possible that some of the teams ahead of them went backwards.
As far as the SOS, the other team having a worse SOS means that there was a bigger potential gain from playing a team with a good record in the CT final.
Having 5 teams in action from your schedule only helps if they win enough games to maintain your current SOS. The better your SOS was to begin with, the more difficult this is.
