How to change offense’s effectively???? Topic

Ok I am wanting to change my offensive style. What is the most effective way to do this with practice time and how long do i let them practice the new offense before i officially change it in my gameplan? Right now use 20 min for offensive practice time. Should i do 10 min on my current offense and 10 on my future offense or what?

The answer is, there really isn't an effective way to do it. When I have done it I go all out and switch and play the new one. The added iq that you get for guys pt isn't much but it helps. With low IQs you are going to get killed some nights but its just part of changing the system, when I am moving up I usually make it a point to choose a school with the systems (or system) I want to run.

I agree with zhawks.

I'll practice my new offense, but still play my old one until the IQs are in the 'C' range

When I did it I put all my practice time into the new offense while playing the old O for a full year. Then, year 2 was all new. I would recommend this if your team is going to win some games this year, but if the team is going to struggle already just change it over and suck it up for a year.

If your team isn't going to be going to the postseason I would highly recommend just going all out for the new O, if you don't do it that way your fr will always be slightly behind the rest of the players in their class the rest of the way due to not getting a years worth of pt O IQ.

Which offense are you thinking of changing to? If you aren't planning on being at St. Rose much longer I would recommend sticking with what you have and worrying about that at the next level.

If you're wanting to avoid any poor year, split your minutes (assuming you put 40 total to off/def) to 16 new off, 16 def, 8 old off. If you're using 50, use 20/20/10. I have switched offense and/or defense MANY times, and I don't think I ever suffered in any particular season while doing it. My approach has been to shift in this gradual way, and it's worked for me.

But as has been stated above, if your team is going to be bad anyway, go ahead and go completely to the new system, not practicing the old at all. If you have a contender, hedge. Otherwise, do not. Good luck.

Great feedback guys. I think before I do anything I will stick with the current formula and then if it looks like the season is heading south then I will do the switch.

I have a really good team this year - Oglethorpe in Smith world. I want to switch to Fast Break next year, just because I know more about that than I do about Triangle. If I am playing a team I should really dominate, like tonight's game against Old Westbury, should I run the new offense, or will it put an almost certain win at risk? Old Westbury is also very thin, with 3 walk-ons and my team is very deep. Plus, I have better team speed, especially at Guard. I just started practicing FB yesterday. I felt like the edge I would get by wearing Old Westbury out would help offset the fact that we do not know the offense well. Part two of the question would be that if I win, but not by as much as would have won with my triangle offense, will that hurt my RPI?

RPI is not affected by margin of victory. As for the rest of your questions, your guess is as good as mine.

Thanks - I am wondering also if I should keep practicing Triangle. I went ahead and set my practice times to 18 minutes on FB and 7 on triangle

also, the best time to switch is if you have a lot of new players coming in - they aren't likely to know your offense anyway, so the IQ hit won't be as pronounced

I'm actually in the process of doing it on one of my teams now. I think the go all out approach is best when you aren't expecting much out of your team. The way I'm doing it is I've been practicing my new offense in the background for the last 2 seasons but haven't made the switch because my team has been a title a contender and I don't want to mess up those chances by switching Os. But next season my team won't be a title contender so I will be implementing the new offense when I'm not expecting much from my team, and on top of that the guys are entering their 3rd season practicing the new offense will have solid IQs.

I agree. Zhawks is right that there is no "good" time, but here is what I do. Keep in mind though, you are probably going to have a bad season anyway so try to build for down the road.
#1: I only switch offenses and defenses when I select a new team.
#2: I select a team that has at least 5 scholarships available.
#3: I select players that fit the new offenses and promise starts and minutes.
#3b: If you have a 6th scholarship, get an ineligible SG or PF that will be an effective starter or 5th man. Put 7's in all training categories and the remainder in his study hall.
#4: I change my offense and defense to 10 at each and use the extra points to improve abilities.
#5: I always focus on stamina first and heaviest so that the player will be able to get plenty of minutes, build his WE, and maximize his effectiveness. The WE will give you an extra 10-12 points of build later in the career and allow you to focus on building Offense and Defense knowledge in later years.
#6: Honor all start and minutes promises. Even when you lose, keep playing them. You are building for the future.
