Ross in season 7 is the most impressive player I've ever seen.

To echo cj and others, Matt Ross had more Wins than earned runs and more complete games than Wins in S7. BEST SEASON EVER.

That guy is HBD's Cy Young. No doubt. that S7 is nearly perfect. All subsequent pitchers in that world will try to win a "Matt Ross" every year after that

I am the owner of Ivan Johnson and I don't consider the strategy I've employed to be "gaming" the system. Johnson is simply the team's best pitcher and the goal is to get him to pitch as many innings as possible in close games.

I don't think for a second that Ivan Johnson is the best pitcher in HBD history, but his 87 dur/ 59 stamina certainly makes him one of the most, if not the most, unique and effective pitchers given his outstanding peripherals.

He is a Setup A with player settings of 45 tpc and 60 mpc, with availability in the 2nd inning or later and a 2 pull. He pitched 262 innings last year and is on pace for around the same amount this season, but my problem is that I think I am under-utilizing him.

Even after back to back games of 50 - 50 pitches, he sits at 100% rest, you simply can not tire the guy out. I could realistically run a 7 man pitching staff with a combination of 3 high durability low stamina starting pitchers, 1 Ivan Johnson, 1 poor man's version of Johnson, 1 guy to close games out and a mop up guy.

Any suggestions/ideas on how to maximize this guy let me know.

The Dodgers were 'gaming the system' when Mike Marshall had over 100 relief appearances and more than 200 relief innings too.

It always amuses me to see that phrase run out everytime someone thinks outside the box and tries something other than 5 starters a closer and 6 other relievers.

I think the point was just that his wins are inflated because of the unique way he is used, kind of like how your tandem B starters get all the wins in a tandem.
4/16/2010 7:52 PM
Wins just conveniently get in the way of maximizing his innings pitched.

Gaming the system = jacking up his wins artificially. If Mike Marshall were brought in for every Dodger Victory that yyear to pitch an inning after the starter went 4 and 2/3, his win total wouldn't adequately reflect his ability.

The people who are talking up Ivan Johnson are not saying he is one of the all-time greats because he might win 35 or 40 games a season. That is just a benefit. The point is this: how valuable is a pitcher who can pitch potentially 300 innings in relief with a 1.00 WHIP and 2.50 ERA? Pretty dang valuable to me. Especially when you factor in that he should never test free agency. I would also love to see him tried as a SP going every other day ala the 19th century guys over on the sim side. It would require a lot of micromanaging, but I wonder if you could get well over 300 innings that way.

Go Superman A style from SimLeague baseball and I think you could get 400+ IP out of Ivan.
4/18/2010 3:33 AM
Thats what I was thinking. He could start 60-75 games and easily top 350 IP by my guess.

I'd love to have a guy like that on any of my teams. He'd allow me to cut my pitching staff down by 2-3 guys.

Those splits are pretty outrageous, but I think the Donnie Brown aspect they're talking about is the health and durability of a closer but the stamina to go deep into a game. The guy at the top of this thread was not at Donnie's level, but had the ability to basically pitch every third game for six or seven innings.
