If a player has a FT shooting grade of F and limited upside for his ability to improve, does it make sense to have any minutes of practice time allotted to FT shooting? Or does 0 mins make more sense?

I decided that my F FT shooter was better when I put 4 minutes into it. I think there are low Fs and high Fs

Agreed -- think of F as a less than 50% shooter (this is just a guess), so if the guy is a 45% FT shooter and you put no practice time in, his skills could free fall so by the time he is a senior, he is a 10% shooter. I have seen this happen many seasons ago.

I would put 8-10 minutes in and just maintain his level of crappiness.

I would agree with this. However, my personal preference is to put 0 minutes into FT practice and use the minutes elsewhere. I guess what I'm thinking is that he's gonna suck at free throw shooting regardless, so why not try to improve other areas just a little more.

Of course, now that we are in the "potential" era and it's entirely possible to max out ALL the other ratings, my attitude concerning this scenario is starting to change a bit. Now if all his other categories have hit their max, why not put the extra minutes back towards FT practice? Still, it would normally be the last thing I would practice, but that's just one man's humble opinion.

for whatever it is worth, I put 11 into it until I get the message that he cant improve and then switch down to 8 - on the theory that that may maintain his FT level

No stats to back it up, but based on what seems to work and what folks say on the fourms

It seems that once you get the message from the assistant coach that the player has maxed out, you can get away with zero minutes and the skills don't drop. Is that generally true? If you put zero minutes in any skill before the maxed out message, the skill will drop. I wonder if it works for FT as well.

i almost always (at least 90% of the time) put 0 minutes in my low potential free throw shooters as freshman. why? because the amount they will lose is very small, almost never enough to drop them from one partial grade to the next. with so much room for improvement, you can make such a bigger difference in the high potential categories.

i can also see the argument for starting at 11 to make sure you aren't near medium, where you actually might drop more than negligibly. and then, going to 0 when you get the email.

but practicing to maintain a low category doesn't make any sense to me. when capped, 0 minutes basically maintains a category. and when close, the same thing is true. so like, why not either practice 0 and use the minutes elsewhere, or put in a couple extra to make sure you are close to capped and then go to 0?

on a final note, i am very convinced in 95% of the cases all low categories for all quality freshman should be 0 minutes. anything else is wasteful. you could lose 1 point or gain 4 in a core, if not better.

ive never understood why this question emerges so much.

if i was getting an F on a test at school i'd much rather get a 59 than a 3. same with an F free throw rating, better a high F than a low F

i don't think this is intuitively obvious at all. look at iq. an F is an F, for the most part. there is very minor variation but there is definitely a cap on the low end that is not far from a D-. knowing that, i could easily see questioning if ft% worked the same way.
