How does this exactly work? Is it even effective?

It basically creates more open 3's than a 3-2 normally would. It might help in rebounding some, as well as make it a little harder to score inside than would normally be possible against a 3-2.

I just tried it for the first time today.

Granted, it was a superior opponent but the results were disastrous. Got killed in rebounding, couldn't defend the 3 and fouled the heck out of them.
