I think we could make a list

Tournament berths/success is most important.

Then CC/CT, wins over the season.

Then Rep/Loyalty, however 2 schools of the same prestige may not want you if one wants a higher loyalty/rep in particular.

But if you want to move up, #1 is the most important. NT runs in particular.

When I made the jump from D2 to D1, I needed 3 or 4 NT appearances (1st round exits).

With one of my current D2 teams on another ID, I was qualified for D1 after an elite 8 run in my first year at that school. The following season I made the NT again (got upset in the 1st round) and went from 30 D1 openings to 67 D1 openings.

It really is mainly about the NTs and building up. If you have 2PIs and then follow that up with 2NTs, then you are most likely going to be qualified for D1. Recent success, while vague, should include "is your team getting better" in regards to post season appearances. At least that is my unofficial view on it.

I was able to go to D1 from D2 after back to back sweet 16s in my first 2 years at D2. Others can go after back to back 1st round exits if they have been at D2 for 6 seasons or so.

So basically if you don't make an NT/multiple NTs, then you're not ever getting to D1, regardless of record/RPI?

I made it to DI UMBC after four seasons at West Liberty that looked like this...

3 seasons prior - PIT second round loss
2 seasons prior - NT first round
1 season prior - PIT Title Game loss

Yes, but logic dictates that a good record or rpi is going to result in a bid.

If you don't make the NT it means you didn't have a good RPI anyway.

I'd be willing to bet you could make d1 without ever making the NT. if you piled up 20+ wins every season against a creampuff schedule and never won your CT, when you got to ~200 wins you would be eligible for crappy teams.

I've heard the basic way to jump from D2 is four seasons, with the last two being NT bids, making it to the 2nd round in at least one.

This resume got olie, a former conference mate, to D1:
42 olie 23-7 14-4 7-1 2-2 13-3 45 B NT At-large Bid
NT (1st Round)
41 olie 20-11 8-8 10-2 2-1 13-3 90 B- PI (2nd Round)
40 olie 17-12 8-5 7-6 2-1 10-6 114 C+
39 olie 17-12 7-6 8-5 2-1 9-7 109 C+
38 olie 10-18 6-7 3-10 1-1 7-9 166 C
37 olie 18-9 8-7 10-1 0-1 12-4 104 C+ Conf Champion
36 olie 18-9 11-4 7-4 0-1 9-7 142 C
35 olie 8-19 3-13 5-5 0-1 5-11 198 C-
34 olie 8-19 2-9 6-9 0-1 4-12 231 C-
33 olie 13-15 7-5 5-9 1-1 8-8 158 C-
32 olie 11-16 8-10 3-5 0-1 6-10 262 C-
31 olie 7-20 6-10 1-9 0-1 5-11 247 D+
30 olie 4-23 3-10 1-12 0-1 1-15 235 C-
