I have noticed that pitch quality has a much greater impact for SP's than it does on RP's. Has anyone else sensed this or am I delusional?

I think it's the opposite, because SPs generally have more pitches.

The margin for error is greater with SPs. You can have a guy whose pitches are 85/75/45/65/45 and he'll probably be pretty good. You have an RP who is 85/45, though, and he can be iffy.
