Shouldn't he show up as a next-season free agent in my Free Agent Contract search? (Doesn't show up in either major or minor league search.)

In real life, you'd be forced to keep him on the 25-man roster next season (or place him through waivers) since he'll be out of options. In HBD, you can keep him on the 40-man and in the minors with a minor-league salary until he retires. He'll keep renewing automatically.
