my season is over but the playoffs are going on. When will it be safe to send my minor leaguers back down without taking demotion penalties? thanks

It won't be absolutely safe until after the rollover.

Actually that's not true. If you brought a guy up for the playoffs and you got knocked out, you can send him down now without taking a hit. I have done this several times.

I would have to disagree with that prez. I called up a guy last season and when I demoted him he took an overall hit of 2. He was a pitcher and his splits both decreased by 2, his ST, CT, VE, GB, P1, P2 all decreased by 1. I also demoted three other guys and they took no hits. I was going on the advice of a veteran owner who has been around the game since almost the beginning, and still my guy took a big hit to his ratings. I wish I would have waited until rollover as I have done every other time.

This is correct provided that you added the player to your ML roster after roster expansion. You can send these players back down to the minors without a demotion penalty. If you called the player up before roster expansion you have to wait till next year.

If you are going to do any demotions in your minor league system these have to wait until next season and must be done before spring training to avoid demotion penalties

Another ? - If you wait until after rollover, you are then stuck paying your guys ML money, no?

Do it before, and then when rollover happens they got back to minor league money

Anyone called up prior to roster expansion will be paid BL money next season AND be subject to a demotion hit.

Anyone called up after roster expansion will revert to minor league money and will not be subject to a demotion hit.

This is, of course, assuming the playoffs are in progress.

Basically anyone up before roster expansion will make big league money anyways, so you are best waiting until next spring training to send them down to avoid the ratings hit

I don't think that is true jahu.

If I send a MLB player down right now (I'm on game 40), I think he makes minor league money next year, not MLB money.

(Assuming he is under 3 yrs of service and not on a multi-year contract)

Am I not correct?

Incorrect.

Actually, I shouldn't say that so definitively. Now that they've changed the rules on 40 man removal, I haven't taken anyone off the 40 once I've demoted them. It's possible that, if you demote them and then remove them from the 40(by passing them thru waivers), that they'll revert back to minor league money the next season.

Mike - Please explain above player.

Started season 15 on ML roster. Played like crap, I demoted him after like 15 games. He then played rest of year in AAA. Started season 16 with minor league salary, not major.

(I know he is back up on my ML roster this year, but I made that decision in spring training cause I was short a bench player)

I'll pass. I'd have to look at your schedule and compare the dates(I don't see any demotions on the transaction page) then figure out when what was done. Too much work.

I got burned in my early years by neglecting to demote late season callups. The next spring I was stuck with them at ML salaries. So now the first thing I do once the ML season ends is to make sure to demote all those guys back down to the MiL before the playoffs end.
