Rookie coach query...95 defender Topic

I have a sf that is a 95 defender.

How would you utilize him to take full advantage of that skill??

My team plays a man-to-man defense.

I don't see an option to directly match him up against the opponents best player.....if i wanted to do that.

ps- He is not my best overall sf.

Here's the thing, TR: Taylor is so slow and unathletic, he really wouldn't be a good defender. Defensive ability is made up of def, sp, ath, bl (more for bigs) and iq.

He obviously has a very strong def rating, but the sp and ath are terrible.

I haven't played DIII in a very long time, but the main thing that's going to just kill you this season is rebounding. I actually think you did a very nice job recruiting for your first time out (certainly WAY better than I did), the main thing I would say is that the pf you signed with a reb rating of 29 is just a guy that shouldn't play (I'd literally cut him when next season starts).

I agree with you in Taylor defense is important but if you don't have speed and ath. its not much good.

Your freshman with 29 is a solid D3 player and shouldn't be cut. Hes improved already in speed, ath plus another big man stat. He will be a good player.

that DEF stat is not only a player's ability to play defense, it also measures his desire to pay D (I've been told), so the 95 DEF guy knows all the sets, where he is supposed to be when, and really, really wants to be a good defender, but his physical abilities limit his effectiveness - he will have trouble putting his knowledge and desire into practice because other players will out-athlete or out-quick him...

I admit I'm not as experienced as many others around here, but my understanding is that in DIII, a guy with a 95 rating in anything is probably going to be very successful at that thing, even if his other ratings are bad. I actually had a guard with a 97 defensive rating when I took over my current team, and that was my best season of HD; in fact, the only guy to graduate after that season was the 97 defensive guy (who didn't even start, but I suspect shut down opposing guards when he came into the game), and lo and behold, my team did worse the next year.

So I wouldn't be too deterred by his poor ATH and speed ratings. Would it be good if he had 80 in both? Sure, and in fact it would probably make him one of the best defensive DIII players ever. But with 95 defense, I suspect opponents will still have a lot of trouble with him, or at least you guys you match him up against won't score nearly as much as they should.

prez, it just isn't the case typically. Especially not with defense. What were your guys ATH and SPD? His guy's are pretty bad unfortunately...

Your team did "worse" the next year because you played a much easier schedule. You had a sim-built sked that first year and won 21 games w. an rpi in the 70's. The following year you clearly played a much harder schedule, going 13-15 but with an rpi of 113.

Also, it's very careful to "suspect" anything here, particularly with the old engine.

Sp and ath are just huge when it comes to defense. I can promise you that if you relied on guards and sf's with high def and really, really low sp and ath, you would be disappointed by the results.
