Giving HD another try... Topic

Ok, I'm back for round two. I decided to take one team and give HD another try. I'll have a tons of questions simply because I have forgotten a lot of this stuff. I am read all the threads I can but from time to time I'll be asking you experts what may seem like simply questions so please excuse questions that may have already been asked a gazillion times. Here are a few...

1) when recruiting players, is it better to recruit a player that is already schooled in the offense and defense I plan to run or do I simply go for good core player regardless of the offense and defense IQ the already have.

2) Since I have taken over a team, is ok to practice lets say trangle but run flex because that what the team IQ is at this time. When enough time has gone by, I then switch to running what I actually practice hoping the team IQ is now on the same page as what I practice.

3) Do I follow the practice guidelines the my asst sends me via emails of a certain player. What i mean is, if the asst coach tells me he ahs maxed out the players potentail in freethrows, do i bump down the time and move it to something else or should I simplly leave as it is?

Thanks for any advise and for more questions that I'm sure are to come,

Shamu

Welcome back.

1. Consensus is the latter
2. Yes
3. I think most do as you described, but I have seen some coaches say they basically give the finger to these messages and keep practicing what makes sense for the position (LP/REB for bigs, PER/PA/BH for smalls, etc). Personally I move the minutes elsewhere, as it seems the most logical for this game (though not necessarily for RL)

I agree with all the answers, except I would not recommend switching offenses, unless you have some magic knowledge or plan on staying at the school for 8 years plus, just run what the team came with on offense, also, beware if you are a FCP coach, as the 'new' engine appears to have weakened it some

welcome back and good luck

As stated by Seble, once you have gotten those emails stating you have reached a potential you can decrease your minutes to 7 in all areas but low post and perimeter. Those areas you can move it down to 3.

You don't have to follow those numbers but they are solid numbers to use.

Thx fellas, glad to be back. I hope to be here for some time. I like the school I am at and want to stay in DII for now. (A long now).

In GD, I think you can win with any offense and defense if you recruit well for those schemes. With that thinking, and the plan to stay at the school for a while, I want to run the triangle (Due to being a laker fan) and run the zone defense. The defense is up in the air and any advise on the "D" is welcome due to that being subject to change.

I'm hoping all my current freshmen will have a good IQ come their jr/sr years and I get better at recruiting by then as well.

Trying to figure out what players to select as starters is where I am at now. What do you guys look at when trying to deicide who starts. Do you look at the top three cores of the player in that position and the top three cores start or do you look at the offense / defense you run and start players based on that ie...trangle needs good passers at the low post even though I don't think that is a core for a low post player. (hope that made sense).

PS. if there is any mentoring in HD, I am all for that. Now really looking for someone to run my team and tell me all the answers but more of a person to tolerate all these newbiw questions :-)
