Zone Doubleteam Topic

Is it a viable strategy to doubleteam from a zone? It seems like it would leave too many players with open shots.

I also struggle with this as well. Playing a M2M wouldn't that mean that you are always leaving someone open and who do you choose to double, the weakest player with the mindset you'll get more TO's or the best player, hoping to slow his scoring down.

I've watched enough Syracuse games to know how they use a Zone Doubleteam, but I don't know how it works in GD.

Yes. It's a box and one, or it is supposed to be. One guy sticks with the DT'd player in man defense and the zone shifts around them with the help defenders rotating out depending on the zone's current positioning. Thus the zone is still in effect and shouldn't leave too many open shots. In theory, the best defense to DT from. I tend to believe, tho, that HD treats it more like the press, in that the DT'd player is simply covered by the 2 closest defenders at that time, which does leave more holes in the zone than the above scenario, which makes the triangle and 2 even more difficult as well. But, to fully answer your question, it doesn't leave anyone more open than running man would since the zone is still in place, just diminished by one player (the help man).

I double-team in the zone and it is fairly effective.

When you doubleteam out of a man defense it's not a constant double, it's a help double which is why sometimes you will see the player you are double teaming shoot and it says nothing about a double team. Zone doubles are supposed to be a box and 1, or a triangle and 2 if you double two guys, but those also won't be constant double teams. If you aren't clear what those defenses are they are essentially a zone defense except 1 defender is playing M2M on a specific player and because of that sometimes that player will get shots off when he isn't double teamed. Triangle and 2 would mean 3 guys are playing a zone and 2 defenders are playing M2M.

Well maybe just not in your case, since your team has gotten torched in just about every game from 3.

You will get burnt using a double team, no matter what defense you play. It really isn't worth it. Trust me.

I think doubleteams can work from a man to man, but I have never tried in zone.

In 2005, a zone with a double-team was described as a box-and-1.

with the description of double teaming out of a zone to be a box and one, does man to man IQ have any bearing on how productive the double team will be or is it all based on zone IQ? (thethrill10 - All*Star - 3:57 PM)
It's all still based on zone - the "one" in the box and one has only one responsibility and that's to follow that player wherever he goes.

In 2007, it was described not as a box-and-1, but as a matchup zone.

Defensive Alignment: Is a zone with 1 double team REALLY equal to a match up zone, or is it a box and 1? I've heard different answers from all parties. (mlatsko1 - Hall of Famer - 4:29 PM)
A zone with double-teams treated by the engine as a matchup zone (unlike a box and 1 where the keyed player is guarded man to man for the entire possession).

So... does anyone know for sure what it is considered today, under the new engine?

Also, if it *is* a box-and-one (or triangle-and-two, for that matter) would double-teaming the opposing team's stud rebounder make sense in HD? In RL, it should help keep the guy off the boards since you'd have his man to put a body on him and the rest of the zone rebounding, but I'm not sure that translates here. Ideas?

CS told me long ago that the FAQ is not correct. It's NOT a box-and-one, it's a matchup zone. I would bet that didn't change under the new engine.

This needs to be clarified! Seble.
