Is this just confusing wording, or am I to believe that players are somehow tipping in shots from 20 feet away?

The tip in on a 3 pointer should never happen. Missing a tip in on your own hook is reasonable....assume you hit it off the back iron and it comes back right at you kinda high.

Eh. Not that strange. If you follow your shot it is plausible. People have put their own shots back in, in real life.

As for a close/medium range shot: Kobe does it for us.

Though not his own shot, Michael Jordan came from beyond the three point line to dunk a missed free throw attempt (worth looking up if you haven't seen it). This just shows that it would be possible to follow your shot from the 3 pt line and put it back in.

Still not very likely to happen. But it is possible. If it is happening all the time it should probably be looked into, especially the 3 pt shot. But if it is rather sporadic happening I wouldn't be too concerned.

I don't think it is impossible.

Say a player releases a 3pt. shot at 18:05.95 secs, and can get a long rebound on the way towards the basket for the put back with the ball going through the cilinder at 18:04.05 secs.

I don't think it is an insane feat for a quick player to cover that ground in 1.90 seconds. I think it is quite rare for the situation to occure whereby it would be likely, but not impossible.

Yea yea, I know ha. Doesn't translate exactly. But the Kobe and Jordan clips are of them dunking the ball while the plays in the PbP are tips, so presumably the players in question would not need to even make it that close to the rim.

I'm just pointing out that it really isn't that far fetched for someone to follow their own shot and put it back in.

It shouldn't be happening all the time though.

I think this is a product of the way the engine works. It decides the out come of the possession (score, turnover, foul) and then once that is chosen it comes up with an event that fits. In this case I doubt it takes into account floor position and assigns the missed shot to someone, then the tip to someone. Occasionally, it will probably end up attributing both actions to the same player.

You saw this the same as I did. I wasn't really surprised by the fact that players were tipping their own shots in, I was more surprised that it was taking only 1 second. I don't necessarily think some of the other posters were looking at the timing.

Although it would register the missed shot when the shot actually bounced of the the rim/backboard, and not before. So you could certainly have a ball that just rolls of the rim and is immediately tipped back in.

PBP is window dressing. i love it and read it for all important games. but we cant take it too seriously.

send in a ticket and they might review this and make a change. it wouldn't do anything to change the engine, just the way it reads in the PBP. basically they would just assign the offensive rebound/putback to a different player on your team.
