Why doesn’t this guy score? Topic

Hey all-- I've played a few seasons of HD but I still have a lot of learning to do. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of why Roy Bushman doesn't score more points when he's on the floor.

With 18.7 minutes per game, he's only scoring 4.4 points. In the beginning of the season, I gave him decent distro (which I have since toned down a bit, though it's still not bad). Obviously he's not athletic or fast, but he has a low post rating of 71, which in DIII seems like he should be putting up tons of points-- athleticism be damned, if he lives in the paint, it seems like he should be making tons of shots, no? His FG% is also only .385 which seems atrocious for a guy with his ratings.

So can anybody tell me why this guy isn't capable of putting up double digits every night with his shooting rating? Is it really necessary for a DIII center to be really athletic? Or is it something else? It seems like in real life there are loads of centers who get by with little to no athleticism.

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this guy!

Yes, athleticism is very important. Aside from that he is a freshman and they rarely do well and he only has a C- IQ in your offense. I think he will ultimately do very well for you but it is simply too early to expect from him yet.

Greg Ostertag had good post moves in the NBA....but he was as slow as a snail with a credit card vertical.

He may be decent for you by the time he is a junior/senior due to increase in IQ as well as ATH/SPD. Just remember: most attributes dont stand alone, ATH is almost just as important as LP in my opinion.

I'm no expert, but I have learned a few things from the veterans & hall of famers and aside from his low IQ and being a Freshman, which I do agree with Weena on his point, he is about as fast as grandma as Chew mentioned. He also has a very poor WE, which in my opinion is your biggest hurdle. He'll gradually get his IQ up with practice time and game time, and speed up a little, but he's gonna take forever doing it with a 19 WE.

perhaps Roy isn't really a "bush man" like you may have thought?

Do you play the triangle? If so he'll definitely score for you in the end. I would say with athleticism as good as it is you should probably dial back his distro against teams with better defensive frontcourts, but against average defenders I would think he will eventually get his shooting percentage into the mid-40s and score some points.

As others have said, he'll do okay for you before he's through, but expecting him to put up big numbers as a freshman because of a high LP rating just isn't realistic. By the time he's a Jr. you should see 10-12 ppg, 1-2 blks. and 5-6 boards...more than respectable!

Thanks for the advice guys! I guess I had forgotten to factor in his low IQ rating. I run a motion offense which he's only a C in, so presumably he will learn eventually. Fortunately I have another center starting for me now, so this guy will have a little while to improve before he's called upon to be a big scorer.
