Anybody have any secrets on landing a "longshot" job? Is it possible to get one?

The only "secret" I know of is waiting a season or two while maintaining or improving your W-L and NT records and hoping the job is still open. There is virtually no chance of landing a longshot job.

slim and none are the odds, but appears from reports like vd that there is a slim chance - I have never succeeded......and I think few succeed - but I think few try
