5 Fouls, Continue to Play Topic

I am not kidding, this took place in my game yesterday afternoon with my Colorado team vs. Redlands. The opposing team which was coached by a Sim AI had only 4 players with less than 5 fouls with 2:24 remaining in the game. So common sense would say that the opposing team Redlands in this instance would only have 4 men on the court. Nope, the geniuses behind the game made it such that two players with 5 fouls were rotated in and out of the game until the final whistle. Not a big deal in a 79 point victory but if this were a tournament game it could have immense ramifications. What say you?

Let me guess.... Everything is working as intended?

There will always be 5 players on the court, if a team is forced to play a player with 5 fouls, a technical will be assessed after each foul by that player.

I imagine this is the only way the engine will work correctly.... well, work anyways....

yeah, this is the actual rule.

Leaving a player in is the actual rule in the NBA. I saw this happen to Golden State this season. In college if you only have 4 players that haven't fouled out, you play with 4.

I can see why the sim has always used the NBA rule as programming in 5-on-4 power plays could really cause some strange results.

Rule #3 - Players, Substitutes, and Coaches

Section I-Team
a. Each team shall consist of five players. No team may be reduced to less than five players. If a player in the game receives his sixth personal foul and all substitutes have already been disqualified, said player shall remain in the game and shall be charged with a personal and team foul. A technical foul also shall be assessed against his team. All subsequent personal fouls, including offensive fouls, shall be treated similarly. All players who have six or more personal fouls and remain in the game shall be treated similarly.
b. In the event that there are only five eligible players remaining and one of these players is injured and must leave the game or is ejected, he must be replaced by the last player who was disqualified by reason of receiving six personal fouls. Each subsequent requirement to replace an injured or ejected player will be treated in this inverse order. Any such re-entry into a game by a disqualified player shall be penalized by a technical foul.
c. In the event that a player becomes ill and must leave the court while the ball is in play, the official will stop play immediately when his team gains new possession. The player shall be replaced and no technical foul will be assessed. The opposing team is also permitted to substitute one player.

Not saying it should apply here (since it's college), but just because I like to see real sources and language when they are available.

The College Rule:

RULE 3
Players, Substitutes and Player Equipment

Section 1. The Team
Art. 1. At the start of the game, each team shall consist of five players, one of whom shall be the captain.
Art. 2. Each team may continue to play with fewer than five players when all other squad members are not eligible or able to play.
Art. 3. When there is only one player participating for a team, that team shall forfeit unless the referee believes that both teams have an opportunity to win.

On a side note, it is interesting (to me) that the team captain must be a starter, according to this rule.

LOL at this. Question to the rulemaker though? How could they not call it a forfeit even if the ref for some crazy reason thought they had a chance to win. There would no way to inbound the ball unless he bounced it off an opposing player every time. Classic stuff!

ages ago this was discussed by then Admin - and the answer for HD was that the player stays in because it would require an IMMENSE amount of programming to make the game work for 5 on 4, which is a very rare situation and therefore they follow the rule that lets 5 play on

I once saw in a high school game where the team only had 8 players. The coach had benched his small forward because the guy refused to pass the ball 5 times before the team took a shot. When the rest of the team fouled out, the coach refused to put his disobedient sf back in the game and they played with 4 guys even though they had 5 eligible. It almost cost the coach his job, but he ended up winning the state championship that year in a stunning Cinderella story.

was this in Indiana? at a small school?

This seems like it's saying the rule was as I thought it was, if you don't have enough players you just play with less. I'd imagine coding playing with 4 players or less is extremely difficult, and I doubt this was even considered since it's such a rare situation.
