My Rochester team in Knight is currently 7-1 with a 64 SOS and a 16 RPI. In general at 7-1 I would have expected my ranking to at least synch up with my RPI if not exceed it. I'm currently unranked. That surprised me, but I wasn't totally shocked. Then I discovered that Milwaukee Engineering, also at 7-1 and with a 128 SOS, is currently ranked #12. I was thinking then that the rankings must have more to do with player talent after this many games than they used to. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Milwaukee Engineering's OTR is a full 25 points lower than mine (515 to 490). Obviously the rankings aren't exceptionally important or indeed anything more than window dressing. Nevertheless, I'm a little suspicious of the new ranking system now. I've heard a few people question it before. Is there something wrong with the rankings?

In DII Iba, I've wondered about my Incarnate Word team.

We are 14-3, RPI 12, SOS 45, team score of 616 and unranked

Ranked teams include

16-0, RPI 28, SOS 175, 600; 15-2, RPI 29, SOS 110, 585; 14-3, RPI 47, SOS 111, 622; 16-0, RPI 63, SOS 264, 569; 14-3, RPI 34, SOS 95, 626; 14-3, RPI 36, SOS 99, 632.

I'm guessing/hoping RPI and ratings converge over time, with teams that played a weak non-con slipping up in hopefully a tougher conference schedule. Wins, just like real life, seem to be worth a lot in the rankings.

Here is CMHMS, another 7-1 team with an SOS over 200 and an RPI in the 40s that's currently ranked #8. At least they have 2 points on me in OTR...

dahs, I understand where you're coming from, but you can't get too worked up with where the rankings are after eight games. If they're still screwy at the end of the regular season, that's a problem. Hopefully that gives the ranking system enough time to work itself out.

They way the new rankings are described is that ratings matter more at the start of the season (especially the ratings of your top 5 players which are weighted even more), and are factored into the equation less and less as the season progresses and you get more results to base it off of.

your prestige is C+. Give it time. Davidson didn't make the rankings during the elite 8 year until the 18th week. They were there the next season during the pre-season.

CMHMS is also A+ prestige. Duke or Kansas will always get the benefit of the doubt over any mid-major, which have to prove themselves they aren't flukes first.

I certainly wouldn't sweat it. When I won my NC I was an unranked 2 seed playing a 14th ranked 15 seed. They are supposed to get better as the season progresses with the new engine, but in Phelan tanner is unranked going into the conference semis with a 19 RPI and 6 SOS, 775 rated squad, so it ain't quite fixed yet.
