Ball Handling and 1 on 1, Taking Over a Game. Topic

Okay, so I recruited this kid http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?tid=0&pid=1576956 David Cooper to run the Point as a True Freshman.  I was really drawn to his 70 BH.  Since then he has grown to 83 BH and 50 P.  Here are the Problems.  27 PER that just won't grow, so he's not going to knock down any 3s.  22 ATH (grew 4 since signing) and 38 SPD (grew 8 since signing), so his ATH will never be very good, but his SPD should become decent.

I use 50 as a general purpose number, so I find his Passing (which has grown 7) to be just fine, especially since it will improve even more.  He should really become a very good Assist/Turnover Ratio kind of guy.  What I want to know is will his ATH/SPD improve enough for him to take guys '1 on 1' like Allen Iverson (except without the 3-PT shot).  If it will, how to I set him up to get aggressive and attack the basket?  What Offense is best for this style of play?  At what SPD can I expect him to be able to Penetrate Effectively, whether to kick out or take the shot?  Or is it simply a matter of having more SPD than the Defender?  What benefit can I expect from such an obviously high D-III BH?

His speed should probably end up in the 50's so he  will be able to score a little bit depending on matchups...but he's not really good enough to build your offense around or to consider changing offenses for. Decent D3 bh/pa PG but complementary scorer at best, find some other guys to carry the offensive load. Some guards with low per/lp can score well(at least in the old engine) but they generally need exceptional ath/sp to combine with the high bh.

If you want a guard to drive the ball more often set him at -1 or -2.

Well I surely don't want this kid tossing up long range bombs, so I'll set him at -2.  His ATH/SPD should keep him from scoring to much, but I guess he'll be able to drive and dish, increasing his Assist Chances?  So instead of an Allen Iverson rim-attacker he'll be more of a John Stockon?  What should I set his Distro at, is that just how often we try to get him to shoot or will it take the ball out of his hands?  I want him setting the guys up as much as possible.

Keeping his distro lower should increase the assists, at least in my experience.

If you have enough scorers elsewhere, I have used something like that at SF before with some success.

I'm not sure I follow, A.  How did you set it up?

Yes, what the hell do you mean a_in_the_b?

At division three, on a team with good scorers elsewhere, I had someone something like that player playing small forward for a while due largely to an injury..  Two good scoring guards and two good rebounding bigs.  It worked well enough.  I really had noone well suited to play small forward on that team so I used a player that was a built similarly to that one, althoug just a bit more atheletic.  Just about no distirbution, wasn't asked to score much.

How was his rebounding?

His wasn't the best, but both guards could board and the Bigs were pretty good rebounders.

playing an unathletic guard who cant rebound  is not smart

Who else is going to handle the rock, which is the primary duty of a Point Guard?  John Stockton was one of the best Pure Points ever, and few would compare his Athleticism to an Allen Iverson or Magic Johnson.  His Ball Handling is 83 already, sure to be in the 90 Range by Sophmore Season, if not the end of this Season.  His Passing will be close to 60 as well.  It looks like this man is built to do one thing and do it really well, Distribute the Ball.  I was just trying to find out if I could turn that ability to handle the ball into an ability to drive to the basket, but that is seeming very unlikely.

As for Rebounding, if I'm depending on my PG to Rebound, I've already got a flaw in my Planning.  Solid Rebounding should be Icing for a Guard, especially a PG.  As his ATH/SPD improve he should improve as a Scorer, I just wanted a realistic view of how I could use him to score.  The Assists/Turnovers will come with the improved IQ and even with that ATH/SPD improvement.  His STM is High 70's as well, so I can count on him for most of the game... sort of that Floor General you can Trust to give you 4 solid Quarters, maybe a little Kevin Johnson?

Seriously, not being a smart aleck here, who would you have running the Point on my Squad?

I think tmacfan was referring to a_in_the_b playing the bad rebounding PG at SF.  As for your PG, I think this guy is good but will can't be elite until his speed gets up.  I'd start Roberts at PG.

Thanks for the info, and sorry for the confusion!

Roberts is not only your best PG, he is your best SG, your best scorer, and best player, period. Only a soph as well.

Assuming he's got some growth left he's probably the best offensive option to build your team around for the next few seasons, not Cooper. Give him more shots!
