So I have the 6th pick in the draft and I was wondering how everyone here sorts and orders their lists? Especially when considering ordering the top x that could be your first pick.

I put the players I like the best at the top of the list, and work my way down.

That's probably the only consensus you'll get, the rest is "It depends . . ." on how you forecast production from a given set of ratings, what your team needs, whether you want to be sure to sign your guy, willing to take a risk, or aim for a guy who won't sign in hopes of a better draft next year. Also, are you an owner who is comfortable trading or not? Does your budget allow you to take more risk with guys of lower health? Do you have equal scouting for HS vs. Coll or not? Etc. etc.

With the sixth pick, odds are good you'll get one of your top 3-4 picks. Consider taking two players at the top of your list that you are going back and forth about and either run them by a mentor, or another experienced owner - not in your league of course - to help point out pros and cons.

Don't draft for a current need, because by the time anyone would get to the majors, your needs will likely have changed.

All things considered, I'd rather have an ace SP than anything else, followed by a top hitter who can play a position up the middle (C, 2B, SS, CF), followed by a surefire closer, followed by a top hitter who can play 3B or RF, followed by a top hitter who can play 1B or LF, or be limited to DH.

With the 6th pick, I'd probably focus on the first two categories only. But your mileage may vary.

At 6th, draft the best player.  Period.

As for the rest of the draft, move every player you think will have a shot at a BL career to the top.  Then rank them.  Be careful not to "group" C/1B/LF/DH or you might end up with a whole bunch of them.

I learned from a mentor to take the best available early and if you have extra first rd picks, look for a power hitting SS or C.  They are usually there too.
