If I have a guy with 2 yrs left on his contract at high salary, and he has options remaining,is there a way to get rid of his salary without trading him?  Can't waive and hope he gets claimed,  if he has options left, right?

If you send him to AAA and attempt to remove him from the 40, you'll have to waive him first.

Or you can designate him with waivers without shipping him to AAA first.

You can also waive him after the transaction deadline, but that depends what time it is in the season.

Well, yes....

But if it's ST, or he's trying to shed salary to sign draft picks, it's not really helpful to know.

But if he waves him and he doesn't get picked up, isn't he still stuck with the salary...as he would be if he sends him to AAA.

Yes.  The only way to get rid of his remaining salary would be to trade him or have him get picked up on waivers.
