so an initial season of hardball dynasty costs $15...what do subsequent seasons cost? do you need to buy future seasons to use certain aspects of the game (redshirting and scheduling like in gridiron dynasty and hoops dynasty)?

Each additional season is $25. The nice thing about HBD is that you get all of the features even if you haven't signed up for the next season.

You also get game credits for making the playoffs, which cuts the costs down if you're successful.
