How do you stop the 3 pointer? Topic

In the last engine a +2 would do a decent job defending the 3 point shot - With this engine it's hard to slow them down with a +3.

Last night we started with a +3 - the oppo went 14-27 (52%) on 3s

At half bumped to +5 - they went 9-25 (36%) on 3s

Total 23 for 52 (44%) - http://whatifsports.com/hd/GameResults/BoxScore.aspx?gid=5961857

Can the 3 pointer be shut down? - Why not recruit 12 guards and just bomb away?

Getting frustrated with this new engine.

That's got to be frustrating.  But Winona St. is only 1-3 so far.

And it looks like the reason that haven't won much yet -- despite their success shooting 3's, is they've only earned 46 free throw attempts in their four games -- and their opponents have shot 153 free throws.  46 to 153!

I think that's a good reason not load up on guards and jack up a whole bunch of threes.

I'm interested to see how you do vs 3pters if you go to just man to man

3 pters are a bit overcooked- i think it especially true when you put in lots of passing in your lineup either through a sf at the pf or a sg at the sf...

FWIW, My team with man to man did a pretty good job of stopping three shooting playing mostly +2 or less.

opponents shooting .269 attempting 16 a game.

My personal opinion is that M2M still does a decent job at stopping the 3, but not as good of a job as in the old engine.

Once I get the IQs where I'd like them then I'll go straight m2m

I've got the opposite problem.  My SG Brian Knott, went from shooting 32.7% and 40.9% his Fr and So years (old engine) to 23.4% and 25.9% his Jr and Sr years (new engine)... No idea how to get this kid to start making 3's again (distro and 3 PT selectors don't seem to make a difference on his %).

I noticed my defense improving as well, holding opponents to 29.1% in m2m (which is much better than it used to be, granted I have better defenders than when I got the team 4 seasons ago).

ahhh I can already see the forum's wisdom that man to man is magic will be coming soon.

Long live the fastbreak!

I haven't really noticed a problem with stopping the 3. I just spent a season playing zone with West Virginia in possibly the toughest conference in all of WIS and had the #5 SOS overall and gave up 33.9% from 3 on 17.6 attempts per game. If anything I think it's tougher to make 3s unless you have a stud, and since studs play better in the new engine it makes sense.

I think part of the issue is that it looks like his first season or two you played a very weak schedule.

3 things

1. Your man2man is not very good as soon as they set up into their offense you go into m2m
2. He has amazing per and depth as well for a d3 team
3. He shot 44% for the game with his mismatch over you and his off Iq is high as well

In the end don't worry, I usually play -3 even against a big 3pt team cause over the course of time they will miss shots in the new engine. I think the biggest problem is you expected to shutdown what I would think would be the best 3pt shooting team in your d3.

On a sidenote, can anyone answer this:

Does increasing the defensive positioning (+) affect both the amount of perimeter shots and the success rate of those shots?
