There are basic minimums for each position.  If I'm looking for a PG and C, and a state has no PGs with SPD > 25 or Cs with REB>25, then I don't really care what their potentials are - they start too low to be a viable player at that position.

I would understand that but have never seen a state w/o players that meet that criteria.  THe only way I think that would work is in d1.  other wise as a d3 or d2 coach you are looking at both that levels recruits and the level aboves for pulldowns.  If this guys wants to start on the right track he needs to use fss and stay under 360 miles until he gets his feet wet

It depends where you are - I have definitely seen some of the New England states not have anyone I'd be interested in when recruiting at Bryant, and a lot of times AR and some of the surrounding states (MI, MO, KS) doesn't when I'm recruiting from Henderson State.  In fact this season is the first time in probably 12 seasons that Henderson State actually has a player from Arkansas.

You also should definitely do searches and identify targets to cut down the number of states you are scouting.  For example, if you are in Naismith, at a DIII school in PA, if you FSS everything w/in 360 miles, you are, at a minimum, scouting PA, OH, WV, VA, MD, DC, DE, NJ, NY, CT.  That is gonna run you about $5500 - way too much to spend in DIII.

He should do searches and identify several potential recruits for each spot he wants to recruit and focus on scouting 3-4 states that have those targets.

In d3 I typically scout 5-7 states if I have 3 or more opening.  If you have less openings 1-3 then you can waitht ell signings and scout more states.  I rather scout more up front and chose from there

Brian, I totally agree with staying close especially in DIII. I just don't think it is wise to buy a car without looking at the engine first. I tend to have preferences that other coaches don't put as much emphasis on. For example, I rarely will take anyone below 2.5 GPA or below 63.5 FT%. Also, I look at passing at PF/C, rebounding at SF, and I have minimums like acn24 said for speed etc. I do this for my DIII and DII teams as well as my DI teams. Part of the reason I'm so picky is that often I'm recruiting for players that will play significant minutes as freshmen so I don't always have a season to grow them on the bench.

I like to see new guys have success so thay stick around.  If they dont use fss and get crap they wont stick it out.  We should have a mentor program for new coaches I could of used it

Totally agree with Weena on this. If I'm looking for a PG and the closest states are loaded with big men and only a few guards that meet my criteria, I typically won't spend the dollars there.  I will sometimes use FSS after signings start because you only pay for the unsigned recruits.

This totally depends on what state you are in.  5-7 is a random number based on where you are.  My ENMU team needs to only scout Texas Colorado and OK to get a good read on recruits where as my UNC team I usually scout CO, UT, WY NE, KS, OK, NM, and AZ if not more.  It just depends on where you are and who you need.

With that said there is no question you need FSS you just have to figure out which states you need it for.
