What to do with this AAA hitter? Topic

WilfredoHernandez

He's 21 years old, His numbers project to 51-83-60-52-87.  He's already there on the three lower ones...which are just OK numbers.  But the combo of 83 power and 87 eye projects to be very interesting.  He's at 78 power and 79 eye currently.  I would expect him to go over 80 on both this year.

In a little less tha 100 AAA games over the last half of last year and the beginning of this he's whacked 34 doubles and 28 homers.  I know he won't hit for a great MLB average (.260 range I think), but h'es going to walk nearly 100 pts and he's going to be 30-ish homerun type guy. Might hit in the upper 30's some years. He's going to be 96 durability and 100 health so basically he can play all day everyday, every season.

Anyway...I could use his bat off the bench in the majors this year.

But he's not going to get into the line-up.  My LF is young and mashing in his first year and my 1B is relatively young and having his career year.  My RF is young and ding very well, too..so Hernandez as a RF (which he clearly doesn't have the numbers for) doesn't work either.  All three of those guys are very durable, too.

So, doe's Hernandez grow more in power and eye this year playing everyday in the minors or getting better coaching and PH'ing and getting the very occassional start in the majors?  I will certainly try to find a place in the lineup for him next year.

If you plan to have him be a starter in the ML at some point, don't bring him up yet.  Same idea with the pitcher.  Put him where he's going to get playing time.

1. Don't promote this guy unless he's not in your future plans at LF/1b (i.e. you have an incumbent signed to a long term deal, another prospect who is limited to LF/1b and better, etc). He still has potential development so playing every day, at whatever level, is the most important thing.

2. When he does get to the majors, be prepared for him to have a couple of AWFUL seasons mixed in with the decent and very good seasons over the course of his career. Guys with splits like his (i.e. reverse-LH favoring, average) figure to have up and down years. Nice, solid all-around player with no exceptional skills but everything at least a bit above average and some very good attributes (eye/power). He might only be league average offensively at 1b/LF but he'd be a very good defensive 1b and average LF.

Thanks guys.....soxfan, you and I are on the same page. That's basically my analysis, too.

Power only increases during the offseason, so playing him every day or not won't affect that.
His power development is nearly done.  He probably will max out at 80.
Also he won't walk nearly as much as you'd think he would with his ratings.  If he's got a .260 avg, you'll be lucky if he's over .335 in OBP.
