Recruiting strategy question Topic

My conference did pretty well this year and got 2 teams in NT and 2 in PIT. The NT teams are pretty much guarenteed one and outs but the PIT has a #1 and #3. At the end of it all i should be seeing $13,000 to recruit instead of the regular 3,000. I will be looking for a PG this year to play in the press/triangle.

As a C- (kind of new so got growing pains as i play with a young team) do i have enough money to pull down a DII guy? Should i wait for dropdowns? or just find the best one available now and dump on him to make sure i get him? or other since i have such crap prestige?

The amount of postseason $ you get is the total amount divided by 12, so out of the 13k your conference will make you'll get 1k and some change

Your main problem is that you only have 1 opening.  If you try to pull down a guy, you'll probably only have one shot at it.  If you get in a battle for him, you'll lose.  So, it depends on how much a gambler you are.

Allblack's right, I would look for a D2 PG that you like, send him a call and wait for him to drop down.

Meanwhile, put a little effort into a D3 PG you like just in case

Make sure you don't look too far up the D2 list or it won't work.

I've signed droppped/pulled down players in the past so I'm familiar with the process, but I've always wondered when is a good time to start assuming that a player is willing to drop down? I know that players contact programs to advertise their availability. However, often I'm not interested in the players that contact my teams, while trying to figure out whether to pursue others (typically having already contacted the recruits by phone).

So, once I have been contacted by any recruit looking to drop down, is it fair to assume that the majority of unrecruited players will be more responsive to drop/pull down methods used by lower teams? I know the later it gets in the recruiting process the more open to the suggestion they become, but could never deduce whether there were specific intervals or times at which this increase in desperation happened.

Nacho, most players are not willing to lower their expectations no matter what cycle of recruiting it is. Sending a single phone call is the best way to know if a player will potentially drop or not. If they previously said no, they will not change their minds.

But, they can also tell you that you're a backup option, but never drop to any team.

Thanks, I always stop going after them at that point, but I never knew it was like a "not even if you were the last guy on earth" type thing.

I've never seen this happen, but has a drop/pull down that is considering a team and/or multiple teams ever failed to sign? A champ and salty veteran like yourself may have caught wind of someting like this.

No, if they're considering a team, they'll sign UNLESS (and this happened to me) you forgot to offer a scholarship.

At  DII, they an ineligible may sign and then, after recruiting closes, go JUCO. You then get a walkon in his place.

anyone else notice that with this new engine the quality of dropdowns has declined substantially?

SInce the average recruit is lower I see no reason why the dropdowns should not be lower as well.
