My team, Johnson C Smith, is really under performing this season and I have tried everything. Multiple lineups, different tempos, etc. At a glance, is there anything that an experienced coach can point out that I'm doing wrong. I know my team is young so their IQs are a little low, but I still believe they should be playin better. Any advice is appreciated very much.

Thank you

I actually think you are right about where you should be.  It's a young time.  Anytime it takes more than a few seconds of looking at IQs to actually determine what the main set is you have a problem.  You got one upset win and came out on the wrong side of a couple 50/50 games.  For some reason every once in a while you get a season where you always come out on the wrong side of the close ones.

I would not being going uptempo  in any games with this team though.  Also, bump of you team practice time to improve the IQs faster.

first off ....you are recruiting way too low on the work ethic side. with this new engine i think the cut off should be like 34 or so. your stamina is low all across the board and you should ONLY run slowdown tempo.

the lineup - put everyone on Fairly Fresh. don't use minutes.
centers - lindsey, poor, drain
power forwards - klinger, hull, drain
small forwards - marshall, tinney
shooting guards - plata, brownell
point guards - owen, stanley

any other questions let me know........................oh and by the way. TADA!

Skunk- Where is Cadiz and why put Hull at PF?  Also drain would get maybe 2 minutes a game with this set-up..  Keep moving things around and get your young guys minutes Car Crazy.  You are not going to be a NT team unless you win the CT so you might as well get the guys you will rely on next, minutes that need.

cadiz is his worst player so i left him out. hull isn't very good at any position, but pf. both players ath/spd are very low, but hull can make up for that lack of quality by jumping into pf spot where he then becomes his second best low post threat.

I believe Cadiz is a great player. He's shooting 55%, he's a good defender and rebounder.

I also have to start Charles Tinney. He's my best scorer, at least among my guards.

uglyskunk provided some sound advice re: recruiting players with a WE below the mid 30s is not going to be so good now, and sticking with fairly fresh for stamina.

burton is right in that slow down would be the way to go with some many underclassmen (9) and poor stamina.

as far as lineup goes, i'd go with this:

PG - Owen, Hull/Brownell
SG - Tinney, Plata, Brownell
SF - Marshall, Hull, Tinney
PF - Lindsey, Poor, Klinger
C - Cadiz, Drain, Klinger

PG /SG - I think you have to start Owen & Tinney at guard.  you always want your best BH/P as your starting PG, and Tinney's stamina alone makes him a better starter than Plata.

SF - you could make a case for starting Hull because of IQ, REB & P, but SF's w/ ATH/SPD tend to excel.   Marshall is going to be very good, i'd get him the minutes now (although his stamina is very low)

for PF/C, everyone has a similar skill set.  you might actually want to bench Klinger to get the young guys some PT until the CT.  outside of passing & IQ, i'm not sure he offers anything that the younger guys can't provide.

hope this helps!

Dont get me wrong, I respect your opinion, but sometimes coaches see things very differently. And that is the case here.

Thank you though, I know your a great coach and appreciate that you took the time to look at my team.

My starting lineup would be:

Owen
Tinney
Hull
Poor
Lindsey

Young team and poor IQ's are a recipe for tough season, especially in a motion offense. I agree with all the others on slowing down tempo, your stamina is pretty low as a team. You're also playing a man defense and your best defenders have low ATH/SPD...tough combination. You have some good base numbers for your freshman with the man defense, but it will take them time to develop the IQ to play it better. I'd go with this lineup:

PG- Owen
SG- Tinney
SF- Plata
PF- Lindsey
C-Cadiz (depending on his potentials...if high give him some good minutes to build for the future...if not start him but set him at Fairly Fresh) with Poor and Drain picking up some good minutes behind him.

I'd be going with Owen, Tinney, Marshall, Lindsey and Klinger.  Your team is 2 years away.  Finally, while you can try to get away with having all guards/centers, you really need 1 true SF to have a deep NT run...and that is something your team does not have at the moment.  Best of luck.  Too bad you left DIII.

I have an awesome SF prospect lined up for next season and I feel bad for how the North has fallen off since drb and I left, but the south is kicking ***. Im sure daenon will turn it around soon though.
