Demotion after Trade Topic

In the middle of the season, I acquired a player who I'd like to send down for 21 days to get another arb year. He was on the ML team before he got to me.  If I assign him to AAA, will he get the demotion penalty?

You cannot accurately predict in advance whether he will or will not incur a penalty, but he does run the *risk* of a penalty, yes.

I don't think I have ever gotten the penalty if I was demoting the guy between minor league levels, but in my experience if the guy is in the majors and you demote him to the minors after the trade, you can expect a demotion penalty.

What if you just don't assign him for 21 days?? Will this solve the problem?

@Fish - I think they implemented logic to make this impossible, I could be wrong but I think the guy will be released if he isnt assigned for that long.  To answer the OP question, I started a thread about this a while ago and got  varying response.  Most people said they have done this without getting the penalty, where one or two had gotten it.  I ended up demoting my guy and didnt get the penalty.  I believe (just from observation) that there is still a chance of getting it, but because it was after a trade the chance is smaller.

I ended up putting him on the ML roster because he isn't worth the risk -- thanks for the help.

When you acquire a guy via trade and put him in AAA it is not demoting him. You are assigning him. If he has options left it is entirely possible and he will not take a ratings hit.

This is not completely accurate. Though you use the "assign" roster move rather than the "demote" one, when you assign to a lower level than he previously was playing, you *do* risk a "demotion" penalty.

I have never seen this and I don't know anyone that has but if there is someone who has I'd appreciate a link to the player.

Can't give the link, because it was quite a few seasons ago and I've (obviously) sought to avoid re-creating the penalty, but I had it happen once, and some others in the forum have mentioned it as well.

As I recall, my guy actually went from AAA to AA (I felt he had been promoted too quickly), but other have had it happen from ML to AAA.

Hmmm. Many times I trade for guys who are underfperforming at a level they were promoted to too early and I assign them to the proper level. I think I've done 6 or 7 time in the past two seasons in one world and a couple times the guys took a boost in ratings but never a hit. Maybe I've just been lucky or maybe you were just unlucky. Did u send a ticket?

My ticket response -

"Any time you assign a player to a roster there is a chance for the ratings to increase or decrease. Additionally, if you're assigning a player to a lower level then he was playing at there is a good chance for a demotion penalty and if you're assigning to a higher level there is a better chance for the ratings to increase."
