Not sure i consider him older but you start him at the ML level. No reason not to.
Unless you care about winning long-term and managing the budget.
Long term winning is more important than short term winning? You'll need to pay him sooner or later. With his arb. years and LT contract, you have him until 30 at least. I don't see your point.
He helps you more long-term as a front-end SP than he does short-term as a back-end SP.

If you still don't see the point, check out plague's pretty detailed anaylsis.

If you still don't see the point, you won't.

Hey, the only place this guys is going to get real growth (to hit projections...and he should) is with his second pitch. He's already at projection with vL and vR.  Essentially there with control.  he has 10 points to pick up with his second pitch.  He has great makeup...but not great health.

If he can help you now...move him up.  He's a #4 type of guy, I think...because of the pitches.  But he will grow just as much as a major leaguer....if he gets the starts, as he will in MILB. He may have some good years...his vL and v R will carry him quite a ways...

He will be a bit better next year.  But if he can help...by all means play him.

Moe, he was signed as an IFA on 7/31/2010 3:07 PM. Yes, you read that correctly, less than 2 real life weeks ago. He has a grand total of 2 starts (13.1 IP) in the post-season at AAA under his belt (none during the regular season).

Knowing that, do you still think the OP's projections are accurate, or do you think perhaps his vs RH (for example) may still have room for growth and get above the 83 it is at the time of signing?

So what I am getting from people is:

If I think I am going to be in the running, and am very weak in the SP department to bring him up after 20 days so his clock doesnt start. If I am not in the running to win then hold off.

I think one thing to consider is where does he fit into your team's rotation right now. Is he going to be a #2 or #3 guy in your rotation or will he be a #5 guy where you have a Long Reliever that would be just as good at the #5 spot. If your goal is to win now and he will help you do that - bring him up. If you are fighting to win 80 games, leave him in AAA for a year or two until you get some pieces around him.
