Here Comes The Jinx... Check This Guy Out Topic

This guy is freaking 11-0 with a 2.17 ERA and we play in not the most pitcher friendly park.

Hopefully I linked that correctly. But geez. I'm starting to think I have one of those HBD success stories that no one saw coming. Right now you can't make any argument for him not being a Cy Young favorite. Anyone ever had a guy rated this low turn into such a solid starter?

I'm sure now that I posted this he will get lit up for the next 4 starts in a row.

He has 19 games pitched and 15 starts at this point. The only reason he even starts for me is I lost a guy for like 75 days and now he has ended up being my ace on a staff of four other pitchers with much better ratings, at first glance.

I do have a theory. Pitch calling. He has two nasty pitches and my catchers have 88 and 87 pc numbers. It has to be something like that. He has been OK in the past in pitchers parks but Boise is not a pitchers park and he is down right nasty.

Honestly if this guy was in AAA I'm not sure I'd call him up unless it was a total emergency. His velocity is bad. His splits don't look like ML splits. His control is just above average. His GB/FB is nothing extraordinary. It's gotta be those two pitches and the catchers he is working with... or simple dumb luck.

His previous years are probably spot on with his ratings. This season, just thank your lucky stars.

This guys isn't bad...pitches one and two add up to a pretty dang good total.  That overcomes his mediocre splits.  He hasn't been bad for the three previous seasons...this year all his stars have alligned.  Next year it will balance out.

The thing is that I think guys are smart enough to know that. So trading him probably isn't an option. Even if it continues and he wins the Cy Young or something, a 69 OVR pitcher with a Cy Young probably has less trade value than a 75 OVR who had a good year. I have a guy in AAA who looks a lot like him. You have no idea how bad I want to call that guy up. LOL

I disagree.  I would love a 69-rated pitcher that can perform.  over time, you can resign him for much less money than a 75 overall.  he's a great value.

In the same way that players with great ratings sometimes have poor/mediocre seasons, players with poor/mediocre ratings can have good/great seasons.

A control rating of 77 is "just above average"?
What would be worst control rating a pitcher could have and still be a quality big leaguer?

50's

but the guy probably won't be a consistently good big leaguer

I have a 69 overall starter that won the Cy Young in Sandberg last season. It can happen. A lot of the reason in my case though was, despite a great record and strong ERA, there was no dominant pitcher in the league and 3 of the other candidates were closers (which people tend to avoid voting for Cy Young).
