Is it ok to release a player in arbitration whose salary is listed as zero? I assume you would pay nothing as long as the player hasn't hit arbitration and been assigned a salary..

Perfectly okay.  Some players do ask for more than they're worth.

Right.  As long as you release him before you aribtrate with him you don't owe the player a dime.  Only time you should flat out release a ML player.
