Signing Type A Late Topic

If a type A goes unsigned during the offseason, at what point is he signable without losing a draft pick?

Until draft prospects arrive.

And you'll probably end up getting a pick for him later, so you're just transferring out a pick until another season plus getting Type A production on the cheap.

And since you're picking in the top 16, it's a second round pick.  If he drops to Type B status, he'll be more likely to get signed and you will actually have improved the spot you're picking in.

Not true Jonas. He would be more likely to be signed as a Type B yes, but he will not be improving the pick he gets since he would be getting a sandwich pick as well as the second round pick. The Type A sandwich picks go before the Type B sandwich picks in which case instead of having a second round pick and a Type A sandwich pick he will have only a Type B sandwich pick that will come after the Type A pick would have.

If the OP signed the guy this season (and he has a top 16 pick), he'd lose only his second round pick this year.

If the player turns into a Type B for next season (or beyond), and someone else signs him, the OP would get a supplemental round pick for that season, which would almost certainly (barring a truly obscene unbalance in FA classes) be earlier than the Round 2 pick he'd give up for signing the type A pick this year.

Yes, the Type B pick he gets would 100% be before the 2nd round pick. You forget that when you sign a Type A you ALSO get a supplemental round pick. Type A supplemental round picks come before Type B supplemental round picks. Therefore, no matter what the scenario, you will ALWAYS get the earliest pick for someone else signing your Type A as compared to your Type B. I must be missing something here because this isn't difficult. Are we saying 2 different things?

We are sort of saying two different things.

You're approaching it as the OP asking about re-signing his OWN Type A. In which case, you are correct in terms of picks. The picks he'd get from someone signing a Type A from him will almost certainly be better than the pick he'd get from someone signing the guy as Type B next season or beyond.

I'm looking at it - especially given jonas initial comment - as the OP looking to sign a Type A from another team. If this is correct, the difference is between what he'd give up in picks (at most a Round 2 pick) and what he'd eventually get back when the player (now Type B) signed elsewhere (a supplemental round pick).

Ok gotcha. That makes sense now.
