Big League contract for international prospect? Topic

What does it mean when an international prospect wants a big league contract and you give him one? Does this mean that you have to put him on your 40 man and major league roster and use up options to send him to the minors? Does it mean that his arbitration clock starts ticking right away?

he goes on the 40 man and his option clock starts ticking, but his arb clock doesn't start until he spends time on an ML roster like everyone else.

Right.  He does NOT need to be assigned to a major league roster.

It's been a while since I've done this.  Can you take him off the 40-man in his second season without having him clear waivers?

No.  All removals from the 40 have to first clear waivers.

You used to be able to use this loophole. WIS closed it down. Now a player must clear waivers to be removed from the 40 man.

His arb clock does not start once he is signed?  What happens once his 3 year, 327k/year contract is up?

He gets renewed at the (around 10%?) increase any of your AAA (or other minor league) guys get when they are on the 40-man.

Like when that guys goes from $54k to $59k at AAA.

I think this is what I remember.  Better for all that they closed that one.

That's odd, because I specifically remember that they said the reason you can't get them to sign a 5 year big league deal at 327k is that the player would be volunteering to not go to arbitration in those final 2 years.

That's true, but it's because you could put them in the majors right away, and not have to arb. them until their 6th ML season.

The idea being that if they're asking for a ML contract, then they may be ML-ready at the time of signing.
