OT- WAC Conference Topic

By Holly Anderson, sbnation.com

"Two teams from Texas have interest in joining the depleted WAC. Texas State and UT-San Antonio, along with Denver, Montana, and Seattle, were scheduled to meet with the conference membership committee in Dallas yesterday and discuss upgrading to DI. (Texas St. and Montana are currently D1-AA)

Denver and Seattle are applying as basketball members.  if the idea of UT-San Antonio joining I-A football sounds unfamiliar, it's because they won't even officially launch their program until 2011. And if you're wondering what "attractive markets" and "Montana" have to do with one another, New Mexico State AD McKinley Boston has some thoughts that perfectly encapsulate the current state of the WAC:

I like Montana's footprint in terms of its location in the west. It has a football brand, even though it's at the 1-AA level, but it wouldn't take long for people to adjust to it.

Phrasing is king: It wouldn't take long for WAC audiences to adjust to I-AA football? What a tragic commentary on our times."

*** Current WAC schools are Boise St;, Idaho, Hawaii, Fresno, La. Tech, Nevada, NM State, San Jose, and Utah St.

With Boise St. vaulting for the Mountain West next season and, pending litigation, Fresno and Nevada either following or joining them in the MWC one year later. Also speculation that La. Tech might find a more geographically sensible home in Conference USA in the near future. Take those names out and Hawaii, Idaho, NM St., San Jose and Utah St. are a pretty meager lot. (and at the risk of sounding snarky, it could be argued that San Jose and new Mexico St. have been playing 1-AA football for years now ;) )

Utah State was the MWC's first choice after Boise St.   But Utah St. said 'no', and Fresno and Nevada were invited in their stead. It looks like a dumb move for Utah State.
There's also rumors that Houston will bolt Conference USA to join the Mountain West.
