Yes, you can redshirt anyone who hasn't played in a regular season game...even if it's several games into the season

No drawbacks, unless playing in an exhibition game makes him less likely to accept the redshirt. I've never seen any data on that

depends on who you want getting those exhibition minutes - and the improvement that goes with them - and the injury risk

I usually don't even redshirt until after I've played my exhibition games.

on the other hand, sometimes I intend to redshirt a guy and forget to do it after the 2nd exhibition....so sometimes I do it sooner

has anyone heard of a situation when you place a redshirt on a player and he's unhappy so you remove it and his WE goes back up, then you replace the redshirt and he accepts it with no decrease in WE?

yes, p_town.  i've done that and it's worked.  what i don't remember is how much time elapsed between offering redshirts.

some players this will work for, some will just never accept the redshirt. I had a freshman guard who would have been 4 deep. Tried to redshirt a few times, no good. Left him off the depth chart. Tried again throughout the season as more games went by and he kept getting DNPCD. No good. Day before CT I finally forced it on him, thinking he;'d have no choice. WE dropped to 1. Season ended, off-season processed, etc. Kids come back to campus and his WE is still 1. Now I've got a freshman (RS) guard with a 1 WE. I had to cut him.

dacj is right. If you force an unhappy player to take the redshirt, his WE will stay low his entire career. I had that experience a few seasons ago.
