If you like rebuilding projects . . . Topic

I know I'm not the only one who enjoys tracking down the most dysfunctional trainwreck of a franchise I can find and jumping in to rip it up and rebuild a team that can compete year after year. It occurred to me it might be fun to add another layer of difficulty by getting together with a few like-minded owners and running a friendly contest. Maybe something along the lines of - owner who gets to playoffs the quickest wins. Tiebreaker being win total over X seasons or advancing furthest in playoffs, etc.

Obviously we'd need some rules along the lines of
1) The team you pick for the contest must have a minimum previous season record worse than 60 W's (or whatever)
2) Must have a minimum payroll at rollover of X
3) Must be in a division whose reigning champ had 90 W's or more.

I think you get the idea. Post here if interested, if we get 5 or more we can iron out the details.

(Can you tell I have too much free time on my hands at the moment?)

I believe this has already been done, a handful of times.

Hah! I guess I don't spend enough time on the boards.

Hey, tec. Would you mind pointing me to a recent thread? I'd be curious to know if it's still being done, or how it played out.

For those who've done it before, what did it take to win? And if I'm not the only one who missed out, now's your chance.

If I remember correctly, it was grivfmd1 who organized it.  Don't remember the world.  It was some time ago.  You can probably sitemail him for details and info on how it went.

Will do. Thx

Ok, I heard back from griv. His concept was a contest within a league, mine differs in that I was thinking across leagues. Griv's plan didn't take off the way he hoped, so maybe it's worth trying again.

If you want to prove you are king of the rebuilds, step up and prove it.

Across worlds may not be meaningful.  Worlds can be very different.  Based on the experience and attentiveness of the other 31 owners, a rebuild may be very lengthy and difficult, or it may be quick and painless.

Sure, I get that. But it's no different than comparing real life teams or players across different eras. The enjoyment comes from the debate itself, not arriving at an unassailable conclusion.

Not to mention, if you can get a few of the participants to make notes of their progress on a thread it could be entertaining to some and educational to others.

I'm pretty confident if I found a few owners who bought in in spirit we could find a way to frame it in such a way as to make sure everyone felt they were starting on reasonably even footing.

So what if someone joins a world, takes a run down team with low commited payroll then signs a bunch of free agents to fat contracts. He adds those free agents to maybe the one of two good players the team already had, just to make a run at the playoffs and win whatever prize that is up for grabs. Then if he wins he jumps ship on the world, leaving the team screwed up worse than it was before he took it over.

What if I like Pina Coladas and taking walks in the rain?
I'm thinking there should be a "Love Connection" between you and DIAH.

1) We work out standards in advance to reduce the chances of this. eg Private Worlds only (where the commishes can screen applicants who might have done things like this in the past), qualifying teams must already have significant payroll issues, etc.
2) I would argue that if an owner like that spent heavily on FA and took the team from 55 W's to the playoffs then bolted - the team would still likely be stronger than it was before.
3) There is no "prize up for grabs" beyond pride and bragging rights - this in itself should disincent the cockroaches.

1) Bacardi makes a convenient frozen concentrate mixer that you can usually find in your neighborhood grocery store.
2) The sprinkler system at your local minor league park can simulate a nice romantic rainfall.
3) And candlesticks always make a nice gift.

OK now, let's play ball!
