Any general guidelines for relief pticher roles? Topic

Are there any good general guidelines for relief pitcher roles? I use high stamina for long relief, A for better pitchers, anything else?

I normally put my 3 or so best RP's on Setup A and don't use closers.

Too many people take a 30/75 STA/DUR stud RP and get < 50% of his potential IP by using him as a closer.  So if you are going to use a guy like that as a closer, at least uncheck the "only use closer in save situations" box and make him available by the 7th inning.

Yep. If there isn't a dramatic difference between relievers I usually put my 2-3 best relievers as setup A and skip a closer. Saves are overrated. I want my best relievers pitching in close games irregardless of what inning it is. So I will usually put them available in the 6th or 7th. I usually run a 7 man pen so the rest are long relief or setup b

I've struggled with the closer role for a while.  I've used a configuration like deanod where I have 3 SuA and no closer.  Until I found a pretty decent relief pitcher with 14 stamina and 60ish durability.  a guy like that isn't able to throw a lot of innings anyway.  I use him as my closer and he's been really good.  I think that's the only way I'd use a closer is if the guy has sta/dur problems.

Otherwise, you should have at least one LR, and as an alternative to LRB and/or mopup, I like to have a SuA or SuB guy who can eat innings ie. has HIGH stam/dur.

Current bullpen config
Spahn: LRA, SuA, SuA, SuA, SuB, SuB, closer
Caneco: LRA, LRB, SuA, SuA, SuA, SuB, SuB

I go the same way as deano and lc, but jimmy makes a good point.

Low stamina and durability, but otherwise awesome is a great player to use as a closer.  I think of '24 Babe Adams in SLB.

I try to make sure my setup guys have have at least 2 very good pitches. I will rotate them between SUA and SUB based on fatigue. I try an use 50+ DUR/25+ STA guys in that role. I use a closer in both my leagues and they are both shutdown guys but their STA is a lttle low. I have 2-3 LRs, at least one of which I use as a spot starter. LRs for me are usually 20-30 DUR but less that 60 STA. The LRs usually have at least 3 pitches, but their quality might be a little worse than the SU guys.
