How much can you reasonably expect a guy with a low WE to improve over the course of a season and how much does it vary depending on playing time and a starting position?  Say I'm looking at a guy with a 1 WE vs one with a 40 WE.  The guy with the 1 has slightly better core numbers at his position than the guy with the 40.  Who should you recruit more heavily?

The guy with the 1 WE basically won't progress at all, and any progression he does make will be lost during the offseason. The guy with 40 WE, if he's a freshman, will still make comparatively decent gains by the time he's a senior.

Unless the guy has amazing cores/potential or I'm desperate, I won't take guys with sub 28 WE.

Thanks for the responses.  That is what I suspected was the case, but I just wanted to be sure.  I'm looking at a JUCO transfer with a 1 WE but good core numbers.  He would be a good player, but I'm guessing that I would be better off taking a FR with a high WE and lower cores and just going with a JR I already have at the position for now.

I mean it depends on the situation. If the JUCO guy already has good ratings and you need him to patch a hole, it might be worth it to take him. If you're looking long-term, you'll want the freshman... but keep in mind that 40 WE won't exactly make him a world beater either unless he has great potential.

I use 20 as my baseline

I recently found myself needing a big man at the end of recruiting and took a chance on a 9 WE with very solid core numbers. At the start of his JR year he's gained 37 pts overall and is a valuable part of the rotation. If his initial numbers are high enough and you can live with the 11-12 points he loses in the off season I'd say give it a try. Normally I use 30 as the bottom line.

I posted this in our CC before this season started - Just in case you guys want to know what happens to a player w/ a WE of 1 - Tarleton came in w/an overall of 705 as a fish - He finished last season at 710 & starts this season at 698.

He is a Sophmore now and full letter grade behind behind the other Sophmore in Off/Def.

i've found that if you take a lower WE and he starts it doesn't come into play as much, however i would never take a 1 WE.

i use 30 as my min. the only way I take someone lower is if they're a transfer and only have 1-2 years left.
