I have never used the "Inform player of redshirt" option in my recruiting for the fear that the player will choose another school who is not considering a redshirt.  Can anyone explain to me how this can be a possitive in recruiting?  Isn't it better to just recruit the player and then take the chance that he accepts the redshirt later?

If I have a ton of extra money and am, for example, recruiting only one player, who I will not need that year, why NOT redshirt?

I agree, kspoor. I never offer a redshirt during recruiting. Sometimes, if the player later rejects my redshirt attempts, I regret it.

If you use your money wisely, you can send 2 or 3 home visits at the same time as the inform of redshirt. It has never failed for me when doing this. Sure it's not crazy to just let him come to campus and then try the redshirt but i've had more reject it than accept it in my experience. I would much rather have him sign knowing he is going to redshirt. It's also popular opinion that a player that is 4th at his position on your roster will more readily accept it. I don't carry 4 players at any position so that doesn't work for me.

lots of time the 3rd person at a position will RS as well.

I've decided I'm going to try and RS a player every season.

it depends on the player - if you are sure he will take a RS without informing dont do it

if you dont want him unless he will RS and if you have $$ to spend some extra effort on him, do it

if you have enough in reserve to get him back if he reacts badly to the inform, maybe

if he is a "reach" for your school in terms of prestige, may be a mistake to do it

if he is a top player at his position, probably wont take it even with extra effort

as with so much, it depends
