Has anybody had success with a closer like Peter "Wild Thing" Shin?

I like his Vr and his pitches a bunch...In AA right now but having great success.  Can he overcome hhis Ryne Duren type of control?

Control projects to only 42.  But his Vr projects to 87, he will have two pitches in the 80's and velocity and gb/fb ration both in the 70's.

A lot to like.  Maybe.

Or, I do have this guy on Cincy -

Shin may need that vL split to be higher over time?

Thanks burnsy,

Your guy has been fairly successful...Maybe Shin can be as well.  Your guy has the vL advantage...but Shin may well have two pitches in the 80's (and another in the 70's) plus he throws a lot more ground balls.

Shin's durability isn't as high...but might work for a closer.  He's growing on me.

If the splits and pitches are good enough, control in the 40s is acceptable. I have had success with guys in the 30s even if used properly.

Control of 32, starting pitcher 5, 9-9 with an ERA of 3.78. High WHIP, but he is effective

Walks are less costly than hits.  The only negative with a walk versus a hit is that walks tend to lead towards higher pitch counts.

I'd try him out... ML quality, imho.... but I like a litle less excitement from my closers.

I don't think he'll be much more than a Setup B guy. I have a guy in Happy Jack:

42 control
67/83 splits
24/39 Vel/GB
76, 67, 59, 57, 45 pitches

Who I am trying out. He has struck out 13 but walked 12 in 16 innings and has a 7+ ERA. Small sample size, but if he keeps playing like that, the sample size ain't gonna get much bigger. Your guys pitches and velocity make him a bit better, but I don't see him having a WHIP below 1.4, which is not good for a reliever.

Re:Shin. Bad control and not great pitches do not a great closer make. I think you need a 90+ pitch and good control to close consistently.

He's pretty much developed.    He's a BL pitcher.    Just understand that his WHIP is always going to be 1.50 or so.
