OT: Fantasy Football Question Topic

Going for the largest audience here and I really enjoy the banter of the HD brethren, thus I pose this question to you that I've pondered for the last couple of years or so.

For those of us that play fantasy football, we know how frustrating it is having a fantasy stud on your bench for X week, so I was thinking in my league about implemening a "replay" factor in my league, where every team owner could insert one of their bench guys into the starting lineup AFTER the week has been played, ONCE throughout the entire season in effort to beat their opponent for that given week.  The deadline to do so would be Tuesday or Wednesday and the "selection" would be confidential until after the deadline, thus if you think you're going to rally a 20 pointer off the bench to win, and your opponent uses his 1 "replay" for that week as well, you'll still lose...it adds drama, etc.

I kind of feel like I just made it sound more complex than it really seems, but I'm just curious as to what some/all of your think about this 1-time "replay"/"bailout" rule.  The one guy I've really talked with in depth about this is staunchly against it, but again I'm curious to gather other opinions.  Thank you and take care.

i.e. I had Kenny Britt's 220 yard 3 TD game on my bench (41 points or so in my league), thus if I were to use my one "replay" it probably would have been that.

I'd count myself against it.  I guess I just don't really see the point.

In a competitive league, nearly every week there could be one swing guy where, if you'd left him in the game, you would have won.  That's kind of what makes it fun is picking between your Brent Celek vs. Jermaine Gresham, hoping the guy you pick will be the red zone target for that week.  To allow people to flip that definitely adds another variable to the league, but, to me at least, it's a negative one.

I'm always looking for new ways to improve fantasy leagues, be it adding in some sabermetric stats in baseball or bonus points for certain achievements in football (300+ passing game, 150+ receiving/rushing, etc)... but I don't know that I'd ever add in something that would allow the game result to be changed after the games are over.  Maybe I could see allowing someone to switch out a guy while his game is being played (maybe before halftime or something) over someone that hasn't played yet, but that's about as far as I'd go with it in any of my leagues.

Fantasy is about predicting which of your guys will have that break-out day. If you nail it, its thrilling. Imagine if you'd had Britt in the lineup that day. It loses all of that if on Monday morning you can go back and call a mulligan...

...but thanks for reminding me about Britt...I just added him in our league to help finish out the season...

In all likelihood it would even out and not really matter much but to be honest it's a terrible idea. There's not really any strategy, just a guessing game of will my opponent use his mulligan or not/do I use mine in case he does, etc.

firmly against, because while you can only use it once, your opponents can potentially use it on you almost every week. in one season you'll definitely have that guy who gets screwed by the replay 3 times or something like that and misses the playoffs because of it. there's almost nothing you can do as a team owner to prevent yourself from being screwed, either (unless you make offers like, I'll give you player X for player Y if you don't use the replay on me this week).

not to mention it probably wouldnt be as much fun following your team during the week knowing that any win could be taken out from under you.

i'd expect it would **** people off more than it would make it interesting. if you really want to have those bench guys scoring for you, just increase the number of starters you have.

if you wanted to give people some sort of odd option, I'd consider doing it with a decision to be made before the games are played - maybe some sort of "superflex" possibility

many leagues play with a flex position - that can be a WR or RB - some say that it can be anything other than a QB.....I can imagine creating an additional flex spot that can be a WR or RB or maybe can be anyone - maybe let anyone have an extra guy in one week of the season - or maybe let EVERYONE have an extra roster slot in one week of the season.....maybe like week 13 or 14??

or just leave it alone

Thank you for the feedback gentlemen.  I guess I'll always think it's a good idea, but you all have also raised great points to the contrary as well...and in the grand scheme of things, what people think is really what matters most.  Not that I was looking to implement the idea per se, I was just curious to see/think what others that played thought as well.

I guess in general when I think about ffb players, I think too many are "inside the box" thinkers, but perhaps I'm just that far "outside the box" that I don't realize/understand my own quirks.

Again, thank you for the responses and if any others have them, I'd love to read them as well.  Thank you and take care.

I once had a coach who told me that a big part of his job was to listen to my ideas for things we could try and identify the 60% of them that were awful, so we could work on the 40% that were useful.
