Important ratings for SF in triangle? Topic

I'm curious what the important ratings are for a SF in the triangle. What would you consider the most important rating and how important is LP? I'm recruiting right now and heading into recruiting I was planning on targeting a SF and a guard, however there a big man I like and will need next season with 2 guys graduating, so I was thinking of instead going for a guard and big man.

My question is, how effective can a typical guard with good Per. be at the SF in triangle, and how much should I focus on LP rating when deciding what guard to play at the SF?

(also, the guard would most likely be playing backup SF, so not overly important and I would probably just go after a SF next year with 4 open schollies)

Per and Passing are more important than BH/LP I think.

I played lots of SGs with good reb at the 3 at Wichita State in Allen until I could sign a really solid all around SF.

how effective can a typical guard with good per be at the SF in triangle? ridiculously effective.

who you choose and what ratings matter most depend on your team. i often build my team less sf first, and then figure out the sf to fit in. if you have a strong shooter pg and sg, you don't really need the shooting at sf. better to get reb. but if you have a true pg, and solid rebounding bigs, its better to get a guardish sf.

Thanks coach, now how much could it hurt me if I started a high Per guard with LP & Reb both under 5 at the SF in triangle/man?

more important than his LP and reb is his ath

Depends.  The low LP only hurts if your PF/C can't score effectively inside.  The low Reb depends on your defense, and how well the other positions rebound.  I would avoid this if I played zone, for example, since zone already gives up the most Oreb.

Speed is speed is speed, never underestimate it or forget it. After that you have 2 types of SFs. The SG type and the PF type. For the SG type you want BH, Passing, & Perimeter skills. For the PF type you want REB, LP, & Passing. Notice both types include Passing. This is especially true in the Triangle. Than look at the DEF Rating & Athleticism of the recruit and compare it to whatever Defense you play. You want both to be in the medium range or better, at least in the 40's.

So to paraphrase, Speed/SG type or PF type/DEF&ATH.

the missing low post is negligible with solid big men. the rebounding always matters, but many of my most successful teams had terrible rebounders at the 3 and they were brutally effective nonetheless (this is particularly true with my triangle team, most of the times i won at SIUE was with a non rebounding guard at the 3). sometimes i would put a solid rebounder at the backup 3 spot to compensate but often i had two guards playing the 3 who would play sg on most teams and that was perfectly fine.

the one caveat is, i always made sure to make up for this with strong rebounding bigs above all else. in that day, you could get by without any real inside scoring. now, that is much less the case. so its a finer line to walk. you need strong reb but you also need a couple scoring bigs, so in the end, your big man defense will probably suffer.

This guy was pretty good coming out of HS, but I run triangle and he suits me just fine.  I have SGs that can shoot from the PE and big men capable in the LP.  He has decent PER, good P and good ath/spd.  I also really enjoyed his DEF.  He is my prototype for a SF.  In the past though, I have gotten by without a single SF on my team and just played a SG there.  S16 finish that season.  Larry Drake - http://whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Ratings.aspx?tid=0&pid=1687640
